Two-tone
hair is exactly how it sounds: hair that is two different
colors. If you’re having a hard time picturing what this
hairstyle looks like, search it on the Internet. Christina
Aguilera is one celebrity who sports more than one hair
color at a time using the two-tone method. If you’d like
to try the two-tone hairstyle for yourself, read on to
find out how.
Two-tone
hair is different from highlights, lowlights and other
types of hair coloring jobs because this particular style
involves having the top half of the hair one color and the
bottom half a different color. Of course, this doesn’t
mean it’s time to mix and match colors. That’s the
quickest way to make the top of the “worst hairstyle”
list. The two-tone look is best when the colors are within
the same color family.
There
are a number of ways to go about getting the two-tone look
at home using a regular hair dye kit but if you’re not
quite a hair coloring pro, your best bet would be to go to
a salon and get it done by a professional stylist. Already
a hair coloring guru? Then take a look at these do-it-yourself
techniques and let the coloring begin!
The
easiest way to prep your hair for two-tone color is to
part your hair in a horizontal line around the back of
your head, using the top of your ears as reference points.
A general rule of thumb is to have the darker color on the
bottom half of the hair, with the lighter color on top but
feel free to do the opposite.
The
first thing to do is apply color to the top of the head.
After securing the bottom half of the hair so it doesn’t
get mixed with the strands you’re working on, begin at the
center and work your way outwards. When you’re done
completely coloring the top half of your head, wrap it
with a plastic cap and begin coloring the bottom half with
your second shade. Once the entire head has been colored,
wait the recommend amount of time and rinse the bottom
half first (the top half should still be kept in the
plastic cap). Afterwards, remove the cap and rinse out the
top half.
There
is another way to get the two-tone look without using two
different shades. If you like your natural hair color,
that shade can serve as one half of the two-tone look.
This means you only need to choose one shade of color to
apply without having to dye your entire head. After
picking the shade you want for the top of your head (with
your natural shade being the color on the bottom half of
the hair), use foil to create thick chunks of streaking
color along the top of your head. By using the foils to
separate certain strands of hair, you can dye specific
areas. After applying the foils’ color first, you can
apply a secondary color to the areas outside the foil if
you wish. The more foils you use, the thicker the color
will be. As a result, you’ll have a totally customized two-tone
look that is completely your own.
