Have
you noticed more men at the cosmetic counter lately? I
don’t mean buying the products, I mean selling them. When
I bought some eye make-up recently the sales person was
male. At first I was taken aback. I didn’t know if I
wanted to discuss my flaws with a member of the opposite
sex. But seconds later I was as comfortable as I would
have been talking with a girl friend.
This
growing trend is not just in the department stores. It has
been estimated that
Avon has over 12,000
salesmen. The reason we are seeing more men selling
cosmetics is because skin care products are not just for
women anymore. That old notion that women spend hours
“putting on their faces” and taking care of their skin, is
being displaced with a modern way of thinking. Men and
women want to look their best and this requires skin care.
Plastic surgeons report that men increasing make up a
larger number of their patients. So it isn’t surprising
that men are taking an interest in the products that keep
us all looking young.
When I
left the cosmetic counter was given more samples for new
products than any woman has ever given me. I was also
given a few tips on how to mix colors for a softer daytime
effect. I made sure that I got the gentleman’s card. When
I want to discuss products, I’ll be going back to ask him.
